Certified Translation — English ↔ German, via French Relay

The principle

In France, judicial expert translator status is always granted for a language pair that includes French — never between two foreign languages. There is therefore, by design, no sworn English-German translator in France. French is not a convenience language chosen to simplify things: it is a mandatory legal step in any certification pathway between English and German.

For a certified English ↔ German translation, the only possible route is therefore a relay through French: two distinct, complementary certified translations, each signed by the expert competent for their own language pair.

We share the same office in Paris' 6th arrondissement and coordinate both translation steps directly, with no intermediary.

The process, in 4 steps

1
You send your document (English or German) and its final destination.
2
First certified translation, to or from French, by the expert competent for that pair.
3
Second certified translation, from French to the final language, by the second expert.
4
Delivery of both certified translations, each signed and stamped by its expert.

Turnaround and pricing

This process involves two distinct services, each billed by the expert who carries it out. Both certified translations are generally completed in 2-3 business days in total, though this can be shorter or longer depending on the actual volume of text to translate. A combined quote with price and turnaround time is provided from the first request — you have a single point of contact for the entire file.

Common use cases

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't there a sworn English-German translator in France?
Judicial expert translator status in France is always granted for a language pair that includes French. There is therefore, by design, no sworn expert for a pair between two foreign languages such as English-German. Going through French is a mandatory legal step, not a matter of convenience.
Is this double certification accepted by administrations?
Yes. Each step is certified as a true copy by the expert competent for that language pair. This is in fact the only legal route in France for obtaining a certified translation between two foreign languages.
How long does the whole process take?
Both certified translations are generally completed in 2-3 business days in total, though this can be shorter or longer depending on the actual volume of text to translate. A combined quote with price and turnaround time is provided from the first request.
I don't need certification, is there a faster alternative?
Yes, if no legal value is required, a standard business translation English-German can be arranged, with a shorter turnaround. Specify your need when requesting a quote.
